"Start All Over Again" is the fifth episode of the eighth season of ER. It first aired on NBC on October 25, 2001. It was written by Joe Sachs and directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall. It has Susan Lewis working on her first back at County General as she deals with a pregnant teen who may be deported if her parents learn of her condition. John Carter, who is now chief resident, tends to his grandmother. Peter Benton panics, as he learns from Roger that he can't find Reese.


On her first day back in the ER, Lewis clashes with Weaver over the case involving a pregnant teenager who fears she'll be deported if her very strict parents learn of her medical condition. Benton panics when he learns from Roger that Reese has gone missing while Carter who's replaced Chen as Chief Resident deals with his grandmother who may need medical treatment but Carter's grandmother strongly opposes his involvement while Elizabeth comes under fire after losing a patient to a post-op infection she may be responsible for which triggers an investigation. As this happens, Abby bristles at a newly emerging relationship in the ER and Cleo finds a better job that is 40 minutes away from Chicago.

SHERRY STRINGFIELD RETURNS TO DUTY ON 'ER': A wary Dr. Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) returns to County General and clashes with Abby (Maura Tierney) and others while her patients include a misunderstood Hispanic woman with seizures and Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) treats an injured man (guest star Joseph Whipp) whose frantic daughter mistakenly crushed him with her car. Elsewhere, Lewis ministers to a man who is pretending to be comatose for a very good reason.

Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) tries to leave the surgery room when he learns that his young son is missing; Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) is shocked to see his ailing grandmother (guest star Frances Sternhagen) brought to the hospital.

Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) must adapt to cohabitating with Greene's teenaged daughter (guest star Hallee Hirsh) and is investigated when another patient dies of infection. Laura Innes, Goran Visnjic and Paul McCrane also star.


Lewis faces a hectic first day back at County General. Benton and Roger become frantic when they can't locate Reese. Carter's grandmother is brought to the emergency room. Carter and Abby deal with inept medical students.
