Jodi O'Brien is a singular episode character in the 1st season, Love's Labor Lost.
History[]
Jodi goes to County General ER (along with her husband, Sean) because she appears to have a bladder infection. Dr. Mark Greene prescribes her antibiotics and she is discharged; however, she passes out in the parking lot and suffers from a seizure due to preeclampsia.
She is treated for the seizure and her condition stabilizes, but Mark tells her that they need to deliver the baby soon. Although Mark thinks that Jodi should have a C-section, Jodi wants to have a natural birth. She is later given an epidural and gets close to delivering.
After 45 minutes, OB hasn't taken Jodi upstairs to deliver the baby and her epidural starts to wear off, forcing Mark to deliver the baby in the ER instead when she goes into labor. During the delivery, the baby suffers from shoulder dystocia and gets stuck on Jodi's pubic bone.
Mark has to push the baby back inside Jodi and perform a C-section on her. As the doctors prepare to start the C-section, Jodi suffers from another seizure and she is intubated. As Mark performs the C-section on Jodi, she starts bleeding out due to a placental abruption as her newborn son is delivered. At first, the baby isn't breathing, but he is later resusciated and taken to the NICU.
Afterwards, Jodi's condition takes a turn for the worse and her heart stops. Mark tries to save Jodi, but Dr. Janet Coburn tells him there's nothing else they can do. Jodi dies due to complications from the placental abruption and the preeclampsia.
