She portrayed Dr. Catherine Banfield in the fifteenth and final season. She made her first appearance in the episode "Another Thursday at County". She is well known for her biographical film roles portraying real life women in African American culture, such as Tina Turner in the 1993 film What's Love Got to Do with It, Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X (1992) and Panther (1995), Rosa Parks in the 2002 television movie The Rosa Parks Story and Katherine Jackson in the ABC miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream. She had other films roles, such as Boyz n the Hood (1991), Vampire in Brooklyn (1995), Contact (1997), The Score (2001), Akeelah and the Bee (2006), Green Lantern (2011) and Olympus Has Fallen (2013). She also had a voice role in Meet the Robinsons (2007). She had television roles in The Cosby Show, Thirtysomething and Alias.
