Plot[]
Benton, Corday, and Reese are involved in a car accident. Scott's cancer worsens, bringing him back to Jeanie's care. Morgenstern returns, but is having difficulties on the job after his heart attack.
Chase is left with severe brain damage after his overdose, and Carter watches over him. Hathaway works on animal rights activists after a protest gone awry. Benton surprises Corday by showing up at her apartment.

DIFFERENT BLOODLINES: Nurse Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) makes a surprising discovery when animal activists are brought into the ER after a car accident.
Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) looks for candidates to help with her study on artificial blood and then deals with unexpected complications in her relationship with Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle).
Jeanie (Gloria Reuben) and Scott Anspaugh (guest star Trevor Morgan) hear bad news regarding his illness.
Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) learns that Dr. Ross (George Clooney) has come to a decision regarding his future at the hospital.
Dr. Morgenstern (William H. Macy) returns to the ER for the first time since his heart attack, causing mixed emotions in Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes).
Dr. Del Amico (Maria Bello) contends with a distraught husband while trying to help his wife avoid a miscarriage. Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) continues to watch over his cousin, Chase (guest star Jonathan Scarfe).
Short summary[]
Dr. David Morgenstern returns after a six-month absence recovering from his heart attack. His new outlook on life however has Kerry Weaver questioning his abilities. Elizabeth Corday decides to start a study on the use of artificial blood in the ER, but the only problem is that she fails to discuss it first with Rocket Romano. Doug Ross decides to apply for an ER attending position. Scott Anspaugh suffers a major relapse. Anna Del Amico is confronted by an irate husband who wants his ill wife to terminate her pregnancy. At the free clinic, Carol Hathaway has to deal with the case of an underage high school student who is sleeping with her 40-year-old teacher. Peter Benton hits a pedestrian with a car but Carter helps him out with an important piece of information.
